Born and raised in Moca, Puerto Rico, Dr. Nelson Cordero-Torres (Dr. Cordero) attended college at the University of Puerto Rico where he graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Science. He continued his medical studies at Universidad Central del Caribe School of Medicine in Bayamon, Puerto Rico where he received a Doctorate of Medicine. Dr. Cordero participated in research studies at both Rutgers University in New Jersey and Columbia University’s New York State Psychiatric Institute. He completed his residency in psychiatry at University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital and is a board-certified diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
Dr. Cordero has served as Chief of Psychiatry at Broward Health Medical Center since June 2019 and as Vice Chair of Psychiatry at Broward Health Imperial Point since January 2019. He is also a clinical investigator at Research Centers of America.
Dr. Cordero-Torres has significant acute inpatient and office experience and is passionate about helping patients live their lives to the fullest. He specializes in addiction medicine and is Suboxone certified–to treat opiate addiction; he additionally specializes in treating adults with co-occurring disorders.
